The Fitness Test
Luke 9:62 But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the Kingdom of God.”
The fitness test for the believer is a test of the hands and the eyes. The words of Jesus spell out here the fitness test for the Christian. It really defines where the believer is with Christ. Often people ask me about Christians who turn away from God. The subject this morning is going to hit on the issue of the backslider as it often referred too. First let me say, as a simple but strong believer in Christ, once you have the gift of His Grace, turning away from the Lord will never be part of your life’s journey.
Think for a moment, receiving the gift from God, grace, God’s Riches at Christ Expense. God is willing to freely give a gift, His riches all at the expense of His Son Jesus Christ. And if you would just take the gift, with your hands, see, the blessings that are from the gift, why would anyone ever say I will turn from the Father who has given me the greatest gift of all, life eternal in heaven. Jesus says in John 5:24 to those who hear His word, the Bible, and believes in Him, just accept Jesus Christ for who the Bible says He is, you will never die. What a wonderful promise given to us as a gift. No I really do not think anyone who has truly received that promise will ever turn back to what the world offers, death.

The fitness test starts with you and I deciding to put our hands to the plow. The tool used to work the fields so it may be rich and will allow for growth of the crops. the field is our world the crops are those love ones in our world without Christ. The balance of the fitness test is what we do with our eyes. You see if we keep our eyes on who the Lord is in your life, well, for with God nothing will be impossible. What often takes place is the one who starts the fitness test by putting his hands on the plow, the Holy Spirit, feels His touch, then they release the plow remove their hands and look back to the things in the world, failing the fitness test.

Put your hands on the plow never look back. Now granted along the way we will fall and stumble, be bruised, scratched in some cases seriously hurt emotionally and physically, but we will not look back. Like Peter walking on the water with his eyes upon the Lord, Peter never looked back, he started to sink when he took his eyes off the Lord. The complete fitness test is you and I allowing the Holy Spirit who lives with in us be the plow that we put our hands on, keeping our eyes on the Lord. And if by chance you stumble and fall, like Peter reach up and ask the Lord to save you from the trial you face and He will always be there to get you out of the storm. Do you have your hands on the plow? The fitness test is, are you fit for the kingdom of God. The only way is to put your hands to the plow never look back. You see I know I am not everything the Lord wants me to be, but I am thankful I am not what I use to be. My hands to the plow looking to Jesus Christ who guides me as I work the field never looking back.
